Retainers After BracesThe reason for Retainers after braces:

When your braces are removed, don’t think that orthodontic treatment has come to an end. After the braces are removed, you see your beautiful smile after a long time which makes you feel great and more confident and you can’t take the smile off from your face.

For retaining your fabulous smile forever, it is necessary to wear retainers after braces. Retainer helps to hold your teeth in their new position. If you don’t wear, there are chances that your teeth will always move and shift and you may require wearing braces again.

As our bones and tissues take a time to reorganize teeth, so retainers are must hold your teeth in their position until your bite stabilizes. The period for how long you have to wear retainers depends upon gaps between your teeth before treatment. It may take one year or more to stabilize after treatment.

Whether you wear retainers full-time for 6 months or only at night or for a year but you must wear it. Fixed retainers are normally kept in place for 5 years.

Types of Retainers:

Removable retainers

For every patient, retainers are individually designed. Your orthodontist can definitely advise you regarding retainers as how to wear and how long you have to wear. In most of the cases, you need to wear braces at night time only. When you are not wearing retainer, it is advisable to keep your retainer at a safe place as they do have a tendency to disappear.

Hawley’s Retainers – The Hawley retainer has been around since the 1920s and is still one of the most commonly used retainers for upper teeth today. This retainer is made of plastic and bendable wire and is ideal when the teeth need to ‘settle’ or minor adjustments are still needed following orthodontic treatment. The plastic comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns so you can have a little fun personalizing this retainer. It is much more durable than the plastic retainers and may also allow minor teeth movements by adjusting the wire.

Plastic Retainers – Plastic (eg. Essix) retainers are removable retainers that are made entirely of transparent plastic, which makes them less noticeable than traditional wire retainers. Another benefit is that they encourage good dental hygiene; patients can take out their retainer when they brush and floss, and clean the retainer itself at the same time. Unlike some wire retainers, plastic retainers cover the entire arch of the teeth. But like the traditional Hawley, each one is uniquely molded to the shape of the patient’s mouth.

Fixed retainers

For those patients who don’t like to remove and put retainer again and again, the orthodontist has also designed fixed retainers for them which are made of a thin stainless steel wire and is fixed behind the front teeth. These retainers are immediately fixed after removing the braces so that your teeth are not moved by the time and your beautiful smile does not get disturbed again. Here you only need to take care a little while brushing your teeth. For this, patients are also given follow-up care by their orthodontist and also some techniques so that your teeth remain beautiful and none other problem is created.

Whether you are considering braces or retention plan, your orthodontist can definitely help at every step in your braces journey and you will surely find the day of a gorgeous smile on your face.
